While the exterior of Hammond
Stadium may look spectacular, the interior was somewhat disappointing.
The outside is beautifully landscaped and has a walkway lined with palm
trees leading up to the park. The inside is quite a bit more dull. Over
half the seats are just aluminum benches and there is only a small roof
that provides shade for the back few rows of seating. The box seats are
fold down chairs, but seem a bit cramped. A small walkway splits the box
seats and bench seating. The concourse is located behind the seating areas,
not in view of the playing field. The concourse area has numerous concession
stands and a nice souvenir shop. But the concourse area is too narrow,
especially when large crowds show up, like the day I was there. They have
a nice variety of concessions that are all reasonably priced. The backdrop
of the park is just fields right now, but a mall is being constructed in
the summer of 2000. Not one of my favorites among the Spring Training parks I've seen. An extensive renovation was done in 2015 that has apparently enhanced the ballpark quite a bit, though I have yet to see it in person.
