Alumni Field was the temporary home of the Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League. They moved into the brand new Lelacheur Park in 1998. This was certainly an adequate facility for just being temporary, though. All the seats are bleachers - wooden general admission down the lines, and aluminum reserved behind home plate. The seating can be a bit cramped with large crowds on hand, which was the case for most Spinner games. One interesting feature is the short right field porch, just 275 feet away from home plate. This is made necessary because of a road that runs right along the stadium. Many on-field promotions took place during the course of the game. An annoying mascot known as Canaligator also made an appearance, but didn't seem to be real active. Even more annoying than the mascot was a vendor in the stands known as the Dog Man. He barked just about the whole game, while selling hot dogs. Apparently his has become quite the legend in Lowell now. A large concession stand was located behind home plate and served the standard ballpark fare. Also, a small souvenir shop was located in the large paved area behind the press box. Not one of the better parks in the NY-Penn League, but certainly better than could be expected for just a temporary home. Alumni Field now is used for amateur baseball.
