Forbes Field was home to
the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1909 until 1970 when they moved into ugly Three Rivers
Stadium. I never saw Forbes Field, but from all the pictures I've
seen, it looked like a true classic. The above photos depict what
remains of the ballpark. A rather large segment of the outfield wall
still stands on the University of Pittsburgh campus along with the original
flag pole. Home plate is on display inside one of the university
buildings. Supposedly it is situated several feet from its original
spot, otherwise it would be in a ladies bathroom. While you can't
get any sense for what the ballpark was like, you can get a sense for the
setting - which must have been great. Certainly worth checking out
if you are in Pittsburgh.
