A few years before Altoona built Blair County Ballpark to host an Eastern League franchise, an independent league team called Vet's Field home for two seasons. In 1996, the Altoona Rail Kings were part of the short lived North Atlantic League. Then in 1997, the Rail Kings switched leagues to the Heartland League. I am unsure if this ballpark ever hosted any professional teams before 1996. Despite being quite old, the park still appears to be in decent shape. The grandstand is split into three sections of seating, each of which is uncovered. All the seating is backless metal benches except for a couple rows of bucket seats. Vet's Field is nestled into a neighborhood at the top of a hill, making for a rather unique setting. While it will never host pro ball again, Vet's Field apparently still gets plenty of use by amateur teams.
