Pensacola is finally hosting professional baseball in 2002 after going many years without it. The brand new Southeastern League brought them aboard as the final franchise, and so far they have been one of the better draws in the league. Pirate Field is located on the campus of Pensacola Junior College. It is a very basic park with just a small grandstand behind home plate. In place of box seats, the team has setup temporary folding chairs. The field itself looks to be in fine condition, though oddly there is no dirt on the baselines between home plate and the bags. Certainly if they are going to be serious about hosting a professional team, they will need to do significant upgrades to Pirate Field. The league overall has had some major problems during it's inaugural season, so it remains to be seen whether the parks will even become an issue. In the spring of '03 it was announced that the Pelicans would be playing on the University of West Florida campus, so Pirate Field has probably hosted its last professional game.
