The saga of Fairgrounds Field could end being a sad one. With the arrival of the Hooks in Corpus Christi (some 15 miles east of Robstown), it seems that the future of this ballpark is in some doubt. While it still was hosting a pro team in 2008, attendance was pathetic (around 100 per game) and the future of the Continental League does not look bright. While I was unable to get inside on my visit, this looks like a nice enough ballpark and would be a shame to see it abandoned after such a short time. The affiliated teams complain a lot about independent teams infringing on their territory, but this is one case that is vice versa. I really hope that an independent team can survive here in the future despite the bleak outlook. It first appeared that no team would be playing here in '09, but with the United League being resurrected, Robstown will get another chance. Unfortunately, after two lackluster seasons, the team has folded. No professional baseball will be played here in 2011.
