If you've been to Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington, then State Mutual Stadium should seem very familiar to you. This is a slightly smaller ballpark, but the seating configuration and concourse areas are identical. Even the confusing entranceways to the seating sections are present here. State Mutual Stadium is certainly an adequate new facility, but because it doesn't break any new ground architecturally and because the setting doesn't give you any indication as to where you are, it doesn't rank as one of my favorites. Situated in the northern part of the city, the ballpark can be difficult to find without good directions. Even the directions given by the team can leave you bewildered, but part of the problem is that some of the roads in the area go by two or three different names. While all the seating here is blue fold down chairs, much of it is located above the concourse walkway, meaning that it is a bit far from the field. As in Lexington, the number of the field box seats is quite limited. There is no wraparound concourse (which has become commonplace at new ballparks), but there is a large grassy berm in right field where fans can sit. A large kid's play area is also located in the right field corner. A good variety of concessions is offered, from Mexican to BBQ to Pizza to burgers. The prices are quite reasonable and the quality is above average. In addition to the regular concessions stands, there is also a bar/BBQ area in the left field corner which offers a happy hour before select games. The atmosphere can be best be described as the typical minor league experience. Lots of music between batters and a handful of between inning games. There are also two mascots, Romey and Roxie, on hand to entertain the kids. While I couldn't find any major complaints about this ballpark, I just found it to be rather boring and unmemorable.
