Municipal Field (now called Kiwanis Field) was home to professional baseball in Salem from 1939-1994. In 1995, a new ballpark opened to replace this one. Fortunately, Municipal Field still remains standing and seems to be used on a regular basis by youth and collegiate teams. It is located in a residential section of town, only a short distance from where the new ballpark was built. The structure of the ballpark was built into the side of a hill. Because of this, the grandstand does not curve around the field like most do, causing sightlines to be poor from many of the seats. The setting is beautiful here as the Blue Ridge mountains provide the backdrop. In fact, Municipal Field may be even more scenic than the new ballpark. Municipal Field is certainly not a great or classic ballpark, but its scenic beauty and quirkiness make it a neat place to visit.
